Slaves in Viking Conquest are troops.

Slaves can be found as prisoners in Manhunter/Bounty Hunter parties or as troops after one such party was defeated (generally bandit parties).

You can get one to join you during the "Bring back runaway slave" quest given by Local Leaders in villages.

They are (debatable) the weakest combat unit in the game.

Mass acquisition tactics[]

If the player decides to fight the manhunter/slaver parties and acquires a sufficiently bad relation, slavers will start to attack the player if player's party is lower in strength. This in turn might allow the player to gather huge amounts of slaves as fighting troops without the loss of relation with cities (destination and origin of slaver parties). Though the slave as a unit is the weakest possible, due to their low wages, they are the ideal garrison unit (as AI looks at numbers when deciding attack on a town/castle), sometimes also useful as a field unit if player just needs to bolster the numbers for tactic purposes.

One could also hunt for slaver parties for no relation or reputation impact (if at low relation with slavers) by bringing another lord with oneself then conveniently asking the lord to "no longer accompany" the player when close to a slaver ship. The lord will attack the slaver and the player can simply join.
