Mead is a trade and household good exclusive to Viking Conquest. It also sometimes acts as a morale booster.
It is used in feasts, for nobles to drink along with ale and wine. Ladies can request you to bring them certain quantities of mead and wine to make a small celebration. In hofs, gothar will occasionally request you to bring them a certain amount of mead to prepare for a ceremony. When you carry some mead in your inventory, a party with low morale may consume some of it and gain 2 morale per item (this translates to 1-4 horns of mead suddenly disappearing from your inventory). This is a quite random occasion, and even with a party that has low morale, you should never depend on mead as a substitute for food.
Mead, however, excels as a trade good. Due to large quantities being sold in many towns across the entirety of the Northlands and significant differences in prices (some towns sell as low as 160 Peningas while others buy as high as 440), it's very worth the effort of buying it in bulk in one town and selling it in another. It is also used as an end product if you decide to start a brewery, which is almost always a quite profitable opportunity, since the raw materials needed to produce it are very cheap and the value of the end product is comparatively high.
Villages will almost always price mead at around 450 peningas.
