- For factions in other games, see Factions.
Factions are major powers within the Northlands.
Overview[]
Factions are constantly at war, always trying to conquer each other's territory and fiefs, but never able to triumph over their rivals without the player's help. Each faction is distinguished by a different culture and style of army: excellent infantry, excellent ranged troops, excellent cavalry, or a combination of various degrees of troop types.
Each faction is headed by a monarch, themselves supported by vassals pledged to service. A claimant to some factions' thrones can be found within a random fortification's keep, waiting outside their homeland's borders for someone to champion their cause. Inside a Mead Hall and for 30 peningas, the player can request a Traveller for information on a claimant's location.
A timer for in-game elimination will start a few days after a faction's entire territory has been conquered and all its armies have been defeated. If a landless faction regains a fief before the timer expires, it will reset, allowing the faction's vassals to start recruiting troops again.
Viking Conquest[]
- Main article: Founding a new kingdom
There are twenty-one factions in-game. During the storyline or in Sandbox mode, the player may pledge themselves as vassal to a monarch, start a rebellion as marshall to a claimant, or remain a freelancer. A freelance player may hire themselves, their companions, and recruited troops out as a sellsword party, or successfully besiege a fortification to found their own faction, which will be assigned the color red and, if the player is not of noble birth, a custom banner. Sandbox mode also allows the player to start out as already a vassal or a monarch. As the new faction's monarch, the player may swear in their companions as vassals to lead independent armies, convince rival vassals to defect to the new faction, and grant fiefs to any pledged vassals.
Minor "factions" include bandits, manhunters, and mercenaries.
