The Bay of Varcheg is a wide inlet of water from the Western Ocean penetrating into north Calradia separating the Kachyar Peninsula from Calradia proper. To the southeast of the bay is a mist-covered coastal plain which rises into the Uchalion Plateau[1] and to the southwest are the cold rocky coasts of the Ebor Peninsula where seals are hunted by locals for their valuable skins.[2] Seafaring vessels have limited landing sites as the bay is often swept by chilly winds and steep cliffs line broad stretches of the coast.

The bay grows very narrow near to the villages of Dnin and Korsyas before widening again to form a natural harbor for ships, such as the fishing vessels of Kargrev[3] or trading longships bound for Varcheg.[4]

The bay offers a bounty for Sturgian fishermen from Kargrev and Korsyas in the form of cod, char, and other cold-water fish.[5]

Lore[]

Before the first settlers from Nordland ventured into Calradia, the Battanian tribes once lived along its southern coastal plains. Battanian ringforts dotted the coast such as Car Gryff, which is now the village of Kargrev. The bay was a natural refuge for Nordic longships and eventually the influx of Nordic traders and mercenaries brought the construction of Sturgian boomtowns and the emergence of the Principality. Two generations prior to the events of the Calradic civil war, the Sturgians forced the Battanians from the lands around the bay.[6]
